Who can register
Tasmania is unique in allowing a wide range of different personal relationships to have the benefits of relationship registration. For more on these benefits click here.
Anyone who is in a personal relationship involving emotional interdependence, domestic support or personal care may be qualified to register their relationship.
Under Tasmanian law relationships fall into two categories.
The first is significant relationships between mixed-sex and same-sex couples.
Partners in a significant relationship must not be married or related to each other by family.
The second is caring relationships which may be any other interdependent relationship.
Partners in a caring relationship must not be married. They may or may not be related by family.
A caring relationship does not exist if the relationship is based on the payment of fees or wages, is a condition of employment, or is undertaken on behalf of a government or non-government agency.
Partners in a registered relationship must be Tasmanian residents and adults.
This means residing in Tasmania for at least six months and being 18 years of age or over.
