Same-sex couples
Traditionally same-sex relationships have been stigmatised and persecuted.
Less than a decade ago a sexual relationship between two men was punishable under Tasmanian law with up to 21 years in gaol.
Many same-sex couples still face misunderstanding, prejudice and discrimination in everyday life.
In this social environment, registering a Deed of Relationship offers many potential benefits to same-sex couples.
They can prove their relationship status if and when this status is challenged by official institutions, private corporations, members of the public, or even family members.
The ability to prove the existence of a legally recognised relationship can be important when accessing services, applying for insurance or health benefits, or in medical emergencies.
Registration also allows same-sex couples to have immediate access to virtually the same relationship rights as married couples, including in areas such as parenting.
No less importantly, registration allows same-sex couples to have their love and commitment affirmed by the authorities and by the society those authorities represent.
This can be particularly important in the absence of marriage equality for same-sex couples.
While ordinary gay, lesbian and bisexual Australians are refused the right to marry the partner of their choice, registration remains the best way to certify, validate and affirm the existence and the importance of a same-sex relationship.
